Choosing The Correct Windshield Wiper Improves Winter Driving Safety

With winter looming many drivers prepare their vehicles for winter by installing a set of winter tires. While these are essential for safe driving, many fail to recognize windshield wiper blades are just as important.

There are hundreds of brands and types on the market. Which ones are the best for winter driving?

There is no easy answer to this question. There are a number of factors that come to play when deciding. The wiper blades you select must match your vehicle and be suitable for the climate in which you are driving.

Most vehicles come with all-purpose blades installed from factory. These are adequate for clearing the windshield in most mild climates but are rarely suitable for winter driving. With snow, ice and salt a reality of winter driving, having the correct wiper blade is essential for safe winter driving.

You can choose from winter, silicone, shaker, standard or heated wiper blades. Each has its own unique use. Some are better suited for mild climates while others are designed exclusively for harsh winter conditions.

When winter approaches it is advisable for drivers to choose winter wiper blades. These are designed to handle snow and ice and survive the harsh conditions typically associated with winter driving.

Most winter wiper blades will prevent snow and ice from accumulating and clear the windshield’s surface during driving.

However, it is recommended you choose a blade with a tough rubber surface and a body made of a heavy gauge steel. This will allow it to resist severe winter conditions and changes in temperature that cause other blades to freeze and become ineffective at clearing the snow from the windshield.

Some manufacturers have improved on the standard winter wiper blade by making the surface of silicone instead of rubber. This allows it to last longer than rubber ones and provides better clearing capability.

What to Look for in a Towing Company

Do you know what to look for in towing company? My guess is that unless you are in immediate need of one, you don’t give much thought to that question or it’s answer. Most of us hope that our vehicles will not fail us. We hope we will never need a tow truck. It is an expense many, or maybe all, of us don’t want to think about.

I hope you are one of the lucky few who never find themselves in need of towing services. Unfortunately, I have had more than one experience with towing companies and tow truck drivers. Although I do not own a towing company myself, I have some ideas about what you might want to think about when choosing a company to tow your car or truck.

First of all, when you call is the phone answered at all? Believe it or not, some companies answer the phone intermittently. Is the person on the other end of the line professional and knowledgeable about what you will need for your particular circumstances?

Will the driver, along with the tow truck, be there shortly? And if they can not make it right away are you given an estimated arrival time? Even if they can not get to you immediately, they should be honest about your waiting time. This allows you to plan for their arrival and also it can free your mind of worry if they are not there as quickly as you feel they should be. This also allows you to inform any officers that stop to ask if you need assistance that you have a tow truck on the way.

When the driver arrives in the tow truck, is he professional? Does he work with confidence? Is he or she able to answer any and all of your questions? When it comes to your vehicle, you do not want someone loading it on to the truck that does not know what they are doing. This can be costly. You want to be sure your drivers are experienced and confident.

Is the equipment and the tow truck itself in good shape? I wouldn’t want my vehicle towed by a truck that looks as if it is about to break down. I would not want a very old and worn-out tow truck carrying my car or truck. I am not saying it has to be brand new, but it has to be in good shape. A company that cares for it’s own vehicles is more likely to take good care of yours.

Do they have the right type of truck for your situation? Will your vehicle need a flatbed tow? If so, do they have what you need?

I would also advise against basing your decision entirely on price. If a company is the cheapest, is there a reason for that? Although I would not use the most expensive towing company and would definitely call for some prices, I would choose a company whose price is somewhere in the middle. You get what you pay for.

CAFE Standards And The Cars We Drive

There has been a lot of concern about the effects of pollution and emissions on our planet and health. The government has been trying to solve this problem for a long time and it looks as if the CAFE regulations is the first step towards the production of vehicles that are more greener and fuel efficient. Auto makers will have to meet deadlines; their fleet of cars will have to reach certain mpg requirements. Violators will be fined.

Don’t expect to see SUV’s and bigger cars completely eliminated. CAFE is not actually applied to individual car models but to the entire fleet of vehicles. We’ll see car companies build more hybrids and efficient cars in order to offset their bigger cars.

Will these new regulations affect the cost of buying a car? We think so. Automotive companies will need to dedicate more funds and hire more experts in order to produce these super efficient cars. The additional cost will be reflected in the vehicle price. As a result, it will be more expensive to make the initial purchase. However, consumers will save in the long run via reduced fuel costs.

Accidents are another concern. It’s natural to assume that car companies will make cars lighter; this is probably the most cost effective way of improving mpg. However, lighter cars can be dangerous during car accidents; especially if the other vehicle is a big truck or SUV. The regulations will only apply to new cars. This means we will still have plenty of older big trucks and SUV’s on the road. A mix of very compact and big heavy vehicles could be dangerous indeed.

However, it is possible that advanced safety features may offset the weight factor. Cars of today boast a large array of advanced safety features that weren’t available ten years ago. We can expect CAFE to prompt auto makers to attempt and build autos that are safe while still meeting the new regulations.

As we all know, luxury brands generally boast V8 engines and are known for their horsepower. How will they meet these requirements? There is talk right now that the current administration will actually make an exemption for luxury car makers even though they won’t be able to meet requirements. We can expect the price of luxury autos to rise even further; consumers may have to pay extra for driving a vehicle that doesn’t meet the requirements.
